Presence
Steven Soderbergh challenges his film-making abilities in this innovative paranormal narrative captured wholly through the eyes of the phantom. After a clan with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe occupies their recent residence, the filming device – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of aware of the ghostly being, and it looks like protective of her. But why? It's a fun idea that remains concise, including a revelation you might not see coming. The Black Phone
The director's contained scarefest remains effective even without a continuation. Located in 1978 Denver, a series of disappearances has left the children frightened. After Finney is taken by “the Grabber” and locked up in a dungeon, he dreads a fatal end. But the non-functional line in the room continues to ring, with eerie communicators providing assistance, while the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen could save him. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, the Film4 channel
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the struggle between spirituality and money, it's a knockout win for Mammon in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top biopic regarding the shamed televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor plays the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye commence capitalizing on the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of poor styling, bad makeup and bad faith, though the lead actress succeeds to present Tammy Faye in a likable light. Next Tuesday, late night, the Film4 channel
