Our Top Record of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Number One Place.

Initially, Lux could seem more like a challenging university quiz rather than the latest popular music album by an artist whose last hit featured a global pop icon. Split across 4 different parts and performed in thirteen languages, this is a head-spinning symphonic opus investigating female mystique, spiritual transcendence, and corporal transformation, frequently via the prism of different female saints. The end of a relationship—a topic treated with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot heavenward here, buoyed by the constant presence of a major orchestra and contributions from an award-winning songwriter within a long list of collaborators. Its sheer audacity by itself makes the work of other artists seem rather small.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

The fact that Lux succeeds in avoid dry academic chin-stroking is nothing short of miraculous, with complete praise going to Rosalía. While this is not the first time project to blend the past with modern styles, its scale are far higher on Lux, with the balancing act more precarious. What really raises this fourth album, beyond its multilayered melodies, rich arrangements, and inherent drama, is an essential sense of fun. Similar to the iconic artist at her peak, you find a captivating sense to Rosalía's singing that pulls you into its tornado. When she is tearing hearts in two, you nevertheless desire to be alongside her through the journey.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

This exuberant spirit comes forth clearly during a stunning Italian ballad about a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool over several moments. Then, all the music falls away, and we hear a gleeful giggle and a comment before a hilariously exaggerated orchestral surge thuds down like cartoonish force. The song then segues to the frenetic track featuring racing strings, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than Björk.

"The charm of this album is that the listener rarely exactly understand—nor want to know—where it is going to next."

Almost each track ends in a totally distinct place from how it started. A track examines the fleeting nature of celebrity with a featherlight orchestration only to collapsing into electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a song that recalls the artist's earlier rhythmic work starts out moody and brooding, featuring prowling beats, before sudden flamenco rhythms and a heavenly chorus arrive to smooth its rough edges.

The Balance Of Art and Pop

Another crucial achievement on Lux is straddling the gap between radical innovation and mainstream accessibility. It is little surprise that it has become the artist's highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a suite of truly catchy hits. A song performed entirely in English swells on a chorus that seems to collect increasingly infectious melodies as it spins skyward. That trick is repeated on a different powerful ballad that expands and constricts, weaving layered tunes like a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number seduces via its playful, theatrical flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it shares the pop culture honesty of contemporary heartbreak songs, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the singing have a sharp edge, akin to a storybook character hiding a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents pop on a maximalist level, a hungry reach for high Art in an era of looming AI-generated blankness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top drama that skillfully controls its own inherent excess. It is a deep well of hidden gems that requires time to fully explore but never feels like a chore. Where some major releases of the year seemed like feasting on scraps, this record offers a lavish feast at which the guests around it, perhaps tipsy on sacred wine, flutter between conversations about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering grief, and common gossip about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from music's most restlessly inventive practitioner.
